Murder charge laid in disappearance of Reita Jordan

A man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the disappearance of a missing woman from the Halifax area.

Paul Trevor Calnen, 50, of Hammonds Plains appeared in court for an arraignment today.

Reita Jordan, 34, was last seen by friends in Halifax on March 19th.

Police say members of the Integrated Major Crimes Unit arrested a man yesterday afternoon on Brunswick Street.

Calnen will remain in custody until his next court appearance July 22nd.

Political parties call on Zinck to resign

The three political parties with seats in the Nova Scotia legislature are calling on the independent MLA for Dartmouth North to resign after he pleaded guilty to charges stemming from the MLA spending scandal.

Trevor Zinck pleaded guilty to charges of fraud and breach of trust yesterday

Liberal Opposition Leader Stephen McNeil says if Zinck refuses to step down, Premier Darrell Dexter should recall the house where a motion to expel the politician could be put forward.

Deputy premier Frank Corbett is also calling for Zinck's resignation, adding that he's prepared to consult with the Speaker and opposition house leaders about recalling the legislature to formally expel him.

Speaking outside court yesterday, Zinck said that he made errors with his expense claims, but wants to remain an MLA and is in discussions with the Speaker's Office.

Court heard the Speaker's Office provided Zinck with more than $10,000 to cover constituency expenses in 2008 and 2009, but most of those he owed money were never repaid.

Zinck and three other politicians were charged in February 2011 after the auditor general launched an investigation into constituency allowance spending.

Fall River man killed in crash

A single-vehicle crash near Bridgetown has claimed the life of a Fall River Man.

Annapolis District RCMP was called to Highway 101 west of Exit 22 around 10:45 yesterday morning.

Police say a 65-year-old man driving a pickup truck left the road and struck a tree.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Dartmouth man facing immigration fraud charges

A Dartmouth businessman is facing dozens of counts of immigration fraud in connection with an investigation by the Canada Border Services Agency.

The CBSA alleges Hector Mantolino, owner of Mantolino Property Services Ltd., paid some Filipino janitors as little as $3.13 an hour and told them to lie about their wages if they wanted to stay in Canada.

The agency believes 28 people were victims of the fraud.

CBSA Director of Enforcement and Intelligence Albert Price says Mantolino was arrested in April and is facing 56 charges under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

Mantolino is also accused of providing false statements to more than one federal government department about the workers' employment conditions.

He also allegedly developed false businesses and submitted fraudulent documents to various government agencies.

Late night ferry service returns

Halifax Regional Council has voted for the return of late-night ferry crossings on Halifax harbour.

Ten months ago, councillors voted to suspend the weekday service to cut costs.

Until yesterday, the last ferry run between Dartmouth and Halifax was 10:15 p.m.

The last crossing from Halifax now leaves at 11:45 p.m.

Teen charged in Timberlea shooting back in court today

18 year old Daniel Simon Day who faces two dozen charges included attempted murder in a Timberlea shooting over the weekend, made his first court appearance in court yesterday. He will be back in court today in Halifax to set a bail hearing. The call came in to Police Saturday just after 10 am with reports of gunshots fired in the Forest Glen Drive area. Three other teenaged boys were arrested at the scene and were aged 17, 18 and 19. They were released but face an array of weapons related charges and will appear in court in July.

Robbery at bank in Fall River

A Bank in the Fall River area was victim to an armed Robbery yesterday. Police say a man entered the Bank of Nova Scotia at around 4:20 pm and demanded cash. He managed to flee with an undisclosed sum of money. No word on what type of weapon was used.

Zinck still wants to represent his constituents despite guilty plea

Even though Former NDP caucus member, Trevor Zinck, knows that he now has a criminal record, he still wants to represent his constituents in Dartmouth North. Zinck entered a guilty plea yesterday at Nova Scotia Supreme court in the city to breach of trust and fraud over five thousand dollars.
The plea came on the fifth day of his trial and Crown attorney Andrew MacDonald says he will seek jail time for Zinck. Back in February 2011 an investigation opened into constituency allowance spending by the province’s auditor general. Zinck was one of four politicians charged following the investigation. He is the only one who now sits in the legislature as an independent.

There are still hard battles ahead, but the Boston Bruins are gaining momentum. Daniel Paille and Patrice Bergeron rallied in the second period to stave off the Blakhawks... Then the third period was up to Tukka Rask, who stopped 28 pucks for the 2-0 shutout. The series is 2-1 in favor of Boston.

Baseball action saw the Blue Jays take a 2-0 win over the Rockies in Colorado. They are right back on the horse tonight, playing game 2 of the interleague series. The Red Sox are host to the Rays in Boston. They play a double header today at Fenway with one game going early in the afternoon and the next this evening.
